Amritsar, May 10

Three assailants robbed a jeweller and took away gold worth Rs 33 lakh and Rs 2 lakh cash at Guru Bazaar, near Golden Temple, late on Thursday evening.

The robbers shot at an employee of the goldsmith, identified as Mukesh Kumar. He was rushed to hospital as bullets hit him in the thigh.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police JS Walia along with other senior police officers started investigating the matter.

Partap Singh, the jeweller, said the accused decamped with mixed gold weighing around 1.1 kg worth Rs 33 lakh and Rs 2 lakh cash.

He said he was about to shut the shop when the robbers with covered faces barged in. They first shot at Mukesh and then took away the box containing gold and cash. They fled on a bike while firing in air.

Walia said there was no CCTV camera at the shop, but they were scrutinising the ones installed at nearby areas.

Meanwhile in another firing incident, two unknown persons fired at a local resident, identified as Vicky Datta. The victim was returning home after an evening walk here. The police authorities are investigating the matter.
