The government ITI situated on the GT road here is ‘powerless’ for the past couple of months.

The PSPCL had detected power theft at the ITI two months ago, following which it snapped the electricity connection of the institute. The powercom also slapped a fine of Rs 10 lakh on the ITI, including the dues of actual power consumption, which has not been paid yet.

On Wednesday, the students of the institute staged a protest against the state government and sought release of funds to the institute so that the PSPCL dues could be cleared and the power connection of the institute restored. The ITI has about 450 students getting training in various industrial trades. The snapping of power connection has affected their studies.

The ongoing heat wave has made it difficult for the students to attend classes.

Iqbal Singh, vice-principal of the ITI, said the issue had been brought into notice of the state government through the Principal Secretary of the Technical Education Department. The government was yet to release funds to clear the power dues. The institute has limited sources of income.

An employee of the ITI said apart from non-receipt of grants, successive head of the institute did not bother to pay the power dues, which led to snapping of the power connection.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the ‘kundi’ connection was first installed to draw power from the main supply line during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections when EVMs were kept on the ITI premises and counting of votes was done. Later, the ITI authorities ignored the ‘kundi’ connection for a couple of years till the PSPCL officials detected it.
