Debt-ridden bizman shoots himself, dies

Abohar, May 10

A small-time businessman shot himself using an unlicensed pistol at 1 pm on Thursday as bank officials insisted on taking possession of his house due to default in payment of loan at a village near Hanumangarh.

SHO Raj Kumar Legha said Ganesh Mahajan (45) was shifted to the Civil Hospital in a critical condition.

He succumbed to the wound at 4.30 pm, officials said. Assistant Superintendent of Police Narender Singh and DSP Bhupinder Singh visited his house in the evening.

The post-mortem will be conducted on Friday and legal proceedings will follow.

Preliminary investigation reportedly indicated that Ganesh had mortgaged his house as guarantee in Gandhibadi village against a loan advanced by the AU Small Finance and Bank to run a grocery shop in the village.

He was unable to pay back Rs 5.3 lakh that included the interest on the pending instalments. Bank officials, who had got judicial orders to seize his house, were accompanied by ASI Fateh Chand, besides other cops on Thursday.

Ganesh requested for more time to repay the loan, but officials refused. At 1 pm, he went to his bedroom and within a few minutes, a gun shot was heard. Finding Ganesh in a pool of blood, bank and police officials left the place immediately. — OC
