Nabha, May 10
The families of four debt-ridden farmers, who committed suicide last year, continue to suffer in the absence of financial assistance from the state government, which was to decide their cases within a month of the receipt of application.
As per the official list, a copy of which is with The Tribune, five suicide cases pertained to this subdivision. Two cases of farm suicides were reported from Kakrala village and one each from Nabha town, Dargapur and Chaswal villages. While an application for fiscal relief in one of these cases was rejected, those of others are pending.
Sukhvir Singh of Chaswal near Bhadson had ended his life on October 8, leaving behind his wife Manjinder Kaur and a 12-year-old son. The family gets about Rs 1.20 lakh per annum by renting out their 3-acre agriculture land. Manjinder Kaur’s file is still lying with the office of the local SDM.
SDM Jashanpreet Kaur said the cases got delayed due to objections raised at various levels, which needed time for clarification.
