Abohar cops’ initiative falls flat

Raj Sadosh

Abohar, May 10

The “reprieve” offered by the police to persons indulging in traffic rules violation has not evoked positive response.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Gurbinder Singh Sangha on Thursday led policemen in civvies and riding bikes to find out how many people were following traffic rules.

The police were disappointed to find that triple-riding was still very common; some of the users were sporting bathroom slippers; and the use of mobile phone by bikers as well as car drivers too stood unchecked. Many vehicles were reportedly moving around without registration number.

At a function organised by the police and civil administration at Sethi Place in the first week of March, the traffic police had resolved to educate the people instead of issuing challans. This reprieve was till April 16.

On May 3, the district police decided to sensitise commuters about traffic violations instead of issuing challan for two more months.

A “Mobile Traffic Education Van” was launched as a pilot project. The van is equipped with a public address system, traffic signs, educative audio clip, radium torch and first aid box. Women personnel were also included as they are required to tackle women who violate traffic rules.

Instead of issuing challans, the personnel were to offer roses and motivate all to become responsible citizens. Traffic personnel were told to be courteous to motivate people to help streamline traffic but people have not taken it in the positive spirit, a cross section of social activists feels.

Two chances wasted
