Tribune News Service

Amritsar, May 9

A 17-year-old girl, Meenakshi, lost her life while trying to escape from a building engulfed in flames at Passian Chowk on Tuesday night.

Eyewitnesses said the girl jumped from the fourth floor to escape as stairs of the building were on fire.

She was staying as a tenant on the fourth floor of the building.

Some residents claimed that the girl was trying to come down with the help of a drainage pipe. The pipe broke and she fell down.

Additional Divisional Fire Officer Kashmir Singh said some residents reported the fire at 9.15 pm and their team reached the spot within 15 minutes. The girl had jumped before the MC team had reached.

“During preliminary investigation, we found that an LPG cylinder exploded around 9 pm on the fourth floor of the building. It was not a major fire, but the girl might have got frightened. The street was only three-ft wide, which proved as a hurdle in controlling the fire,” said Kashmir Singh.

Area residents alleged that the fire brigade lacked hydraulic platform vehicle.

Despite demand, the government not provides modern equipments to firemen.
