Cash awards for medal-winner players to be released soon

Chandigarh: Students and other young sportspersons of Punjab would soon get cash awards for winning medals in state, national and international games, the Punjab government on Wednesday assured the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The assurance came during the resumed hearing of a PIL filed by advocate Hari Chand Arora before the Bench of Acting Chief Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal and Justice Tejinder Singh Dhindsa. Appearing before the Bench, the Punjab law officer stated that the Department of Sports had received requisite funds from the state government and cash awards would be released soon to sportspersons winning medals right from national games level to international/South Asia level as per provisions of the Sports Policy. Soni meets teachers, promises to consider genuine demands 

Chandigarh: Education Minister OP Soni on Wednesday met members of the Saanjha Adhiyapak Morcha and assured to fulfil their genuine demands. Soni was accompanied by Krishan Kumar, Secretary, School Education; Prashant Kumar Goyal, Director General School Education-cum-Vice Chairman, Punjab School Education Board; and Paramjit Singh, DPI (Secondary). The minister discussed the demands with officers. The demands included shifting of RMSA, SSA and other teachers in the Education Department with full scale, teachers' promotion on various cadres, to cover computer teacher under the ambit of government, regularisation of staff, demands of Sikhya Providers and Adarsh School and the issue of acquiring degrees from outside universities besides transfers in far-flung areas. Campaign against fugitive grooms

New Delhi: The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee on Wednesday announced to launch a campaign for the deportation of fugitive grooms. The trend of Punjabi immigrants abandoning their newly-wed wives after settling abroad has taken the form of a social evil. According to the official figures of the NRI wing of the Punjab government, the number of abandoned wives by Punjabi immigrants has reached 30,000. While talking to the media about the victim wives, DSGMC president Manjit Singh GK and general secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced to start a campaign for the deportation of fugitive grooms. GK sent a letter to Giani Gurbachan Singh appealing to him to order the managements of gurdwaras to do proper investigation of NRI grooms for solemnising their marriages. TNS

Land scam case put off till May 16

Mohali: A local court on Wednesday heard the arguments on the plea moved by former Deputy Speaker Bir Devinder Singh in the infamous Amritsar Improvement Trust land scam. He has learnt to have objected to the supplementary closure report submitted by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau after its fresh investigations in the case. The arguments were on Bir Devinder Singh's locus standi to object to the Vigilance cancellation report. His counsel stated that the investigating agency was trying to save the accused. Notably, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh is one of the accused in the case. Vijay Singla, Deputy Director, Prosecution, stated that the Akali government was in power when the cancellation report was filed in 2016. TNS
