Making amends in the implementation of much-publicised crop loan waiver scheme, the Congress government has now decided to disburse the waiver certificates at sub-divisional level across the state, instead of district level.
Earlier, the government has even held state-level events at Mansa, Nakodar, Gurdaspur and Sangrur.
The move is aimed at speeding up the waiver disbursement, while ensuring participation of party MLAs and leaders at the local level. In the past, MLAs had objected to not being taken on board while disbursing the certificates.
After getting the CM’s approval, the Cooperation Department has decided to roll out the scheme as per the new schedule immediately after the Shahkot byelection.
Confirming the development, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Cooperation Minister, said around 68,000 marginal farmers would be covered under the new schedule. The government would waive crop loans worth Rs 361 crore.
A senior government functionary said the government had so far disbursed loan worth Rs 999.62 crore of 2.02 lakh farmers. With 67,941 more marginal farmers to be included, the total loan amount would touch Rs 1,361 crore.
After the party Dalit leaders raised the issue of waiver to the SC community of loans taken from cooperative banks, the department is learnt to have calculated the loan amount at around Rs 300 crore.
